Project Akili

Psychological support, counselling and therapy that help orphaned children overcome trauma, build resilience and improve their mental wellbeing.

Project Akili addresses the mental insecurities faced by orphans in orphanage homes. It provides psychological support, counselling and therapy services to help them overcome trauma, build resilience, and improve their overall mental wellbeing.

By addressing these insecurities directly, the project promotes emotional stability and strengthens the long-term psychological development of the children we work with.

Project Akili emphasises the importance of psychoeducation, providing informative educational sessions and workshops for both orphans and their caregivers.

How the project works

  • Counselling and therapy delivered by mental health professionals, in settings where children already feel safe.
  • Psychoeducation sessions and workshops for children and for the adults who care for them.
  • Social and emotional learning training, so children build the vocabulary and tools to understand what they are carrying.
  • Partnership with local communities, mental health professionals and orphanages — a key aspect of the project, and one we have built formal relationships around.

The result we work towards

Through Project Akili, the goal is to empower orphaned youths to overcome their challenges, heal from past traumas, and develop the skills they need to lead fulfilling and productive lives. Of the 500+ children we have reached, more than 100 were subject to psychosocial threats — and through this work, many are now change-makers among their peers.
